Is IP65 the Right Rating for Your Application?

✔ IP65 fits if: your device operates indoors or semi-outdoors, faces dust, blown debris, rain, or direct hose spray from any angle, and is never at risk of being dropped in water or fully submerged.

✘ IP65 does not fit if: your equipment could accidentally fall in water, gets used near standing water, or is handheld near ponds, tanks, or flooded environments — that’s temporary immersion risk, which needs IP67.

✘ IP65 does not fit if: your equipment needs continuous or deep underwater operation — that needs IP68. What does an IP65 rating mean for a battery pack?

IP65 means the enclosure is completely dust-tight (the “6”) and protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction (the “5”), per IEC 60529 / GB 4208. It covers rain, dust, and hose-direction splashing — not submersion.

Is an IP65 battery pack waterproof?

Not in the way most people mean “waterproof.” IP65 protects against jetting water and rain, but it is not rated for submersion — even briefly. If your equipment could ever be dropped in water, you need IP67 or higher.
