6.4V 16Ah Low Temperature LiFePO4 Battery Pack

6.4V 16Ah Low Temperature LiFePO4 Battery Pack for Outdoor Monitoring & Security Equipment

On March 10, 2026, an outdoor security-equipment manufacturer came to CM Batteries with a field reliability problem. Units at remote, off-grid monitoring sites were losing power overnight as temperatures fell, and the existing LiFePO4 battery pack was too large for the camera housing already tooled for production. The customer needed a low temperature battery pack that fit the existing enclosure and met the specified pack-level protection requirements before the next production run.

Within a few weeks, CM Batteries confirmed the root cause, selected a low-temperature 26650 cell, and delivered a validated 6.4V 16Ah 2S5P low temperature LiFePO4 battery pack that met the customer’s runtime, size, and safety requirements without changing the camera housing.

Security Camera Customer Overview

The customer is a mid-sized manufacturer of solar-powered outdoor security cameras, supplying integrators who deploy monitoring equipment at remote job sites, agricultural land, and unmanned infrastructure. Their product line covers both standard outdoor cameras and ruggedized units built for winter deployment in northern climates.
As demand grows for off-grid monitoring in colder regions, battery performance in low temperatures has become a direct driver of the customer’s field-failure rate and warranty costs — a single unit going dark overnight can mean a blind spot at a client’s site for days before anyone notices.

Usable Capacity Drops Below −20°C

Once ambient temperatures dropped toward -20°C, the camera’s original battery pack lost usable capacity fast enough to shut the unit down before sunrise, even when it started the night fully charged.

CMB Solution:
Rebuilt the pack around low-temperature-rated 26650 LiFePO4 cells validated for -20°C to 60°C operation, holding usable capacity through overnight cold instead of dropping off.

Battery Must Fit the Existing Housing

The camera housing was already tooled for production, leaving no room for a larger battery footprint — any fix had to fit the existing internal cavity.

CMB Solution:
Used a compact 2S5P configuration (10 cells) wrapped in a low-profile PVC heat-shrink jacket, matching the original pack’s footprint with no housing changes required.

Insufficient Electrical Protection

Exposed outdoor wiring runs made the pack vulnerable to over-discharge from prolonged cloudy stretches and to static discharge during installation and servicing.

CMB Solution:
Built in over-discharge, over-charge, and ESD protection at the pack level, so the custom low temperature battery is safe to install and service in the field without extra external circuitry.

6.4V 16Ah 26650 LiFePO4 Battery Pack FAQs

Why does a security camera battery fail specifically in cold weather?

Standard lithium-ion cells lose usable capacity as temperature drops because internal resistance rises and ion mobility slows. Below a certain threshold, the pack can no longer sustain the camera’s load even at a high state of charge. Low-temperature-rated 26650 LiFePO4 cells are formulated to keep more of that capacity usable in cold conditions.

Can this 6.4V 16Ah pack be resized for a different camera housing?

Yes. The 2S5P configuration used here is specific to this project’s housing dimensions. CMB can reconfigure the series/parallel arrangement to fit a different footprint while keeping the same low-temperature cell chemistry.

Is ESD protection necessary for outdoor battery packs?

SIt’s strongly recommended for any pack that field technicians will handle during installation or servicing, since static discharge during connector handling can damage unprotected battery management circuitry.
